Traditional societies tended to have special rituals during menses and after childbirth. Whether or not they valued women, they understood that a strong, healthy woman meant healthy babies and a strong lineage. Many of the advancements in women’s self care and treatment in Chinese medicine were driven by Confucian values to improve the strength each successive generation. We can use this rich knowledge now to strengthen ourselves as women.
