A Color Facelift

“Color that perfects the skin.” That got my attention. I am always looking for natural beauty practices and products.

The idea that all humans fall into one of 12 color palettes or “tones” fascinated me for other reasons than instant rejuvenation. Coloring is a key piece of Mien Xiang (diagnostic facial diagnosis), which is a critical part of my practice. I also have a love of systems. This drew me to Sci-Art Color Analysis and the pages of Christine Scaman’s blog. She practices in Canada but she referred me to her teacher, Terry Wildfong, in nearby San Jacinto, CA.

A Little Background

The 12 tones are based on the Munsell color system (book available here). It is a research-based system that describes how the human eye responds to color. Our eyes process colors in terms of chroma (soft/bright), temperature (cool/warm), and value (dark/light). There are 12 color families created by variations of these color properties as shown in the diagram below:

12-tone-chart-value-temperature

When I made the appointment, I was a self-diagnosed True Winter. This was largely prejudiced by my snow white combination of dark hair, pale skin, and blue eyes.

I walked in ready for anything. The analysis room looks like a mini studio with bright lighting, a neutral background, and a large mirror. There was a stand holding endless beautifully colored drapes in every hue and texture. Terry explained color theory to me and how we see colors in relation to one another. The purpose of color analysis is to find harmony between ourselves and the colors we wear.

The Terry began using different drapes to find negative and positive reactions. The drapes are truly magical. Our eyes have trouble seeing how a single color affects us, but when we compare 2 colors, the difference becomes distinct. The facial features actually appear to morph, the skin changes color, we change age, and even our personality appears to shift. In this way, through multiple comparisons of chroma (soft/bright), temperature (cool/warm), and value (dark/light) we arrive at the exact recipe of the undertones of our skin. This not about the hair color, eye color, or the overtones of the skin.

Dark Autumn

Autumn colors combined with the gray headscarf made me look like a long suffering peasant from the set of Anna Karinina.

We quickly ruled out warm and muted (i.e. Autumn). The brightness of Spring (warm and bright) uplifted my features mitigating the fact that the warmth of the colors turned my skin yellow. I was clearly a cool, either a Winter or a Summer. This is where it got tricky, so much so that I came back for a redraping.

Two weeks later I returned. Terry was on a mission. She covered not only my hair, but also my brows, in the lovely gray head covering you see pictured. There would be no distractions. We revisited the 4 finalists, all cool or cool neutral.

The purpose of the test drapes is to cause a reaction in the skin. These will most likely not be your best colors, but they will cause strong, noticeable reactions. In the pictures below you cannot see the dramatic shifts in energy that you see in the studio, but it gives an idea of the process.

True Winter is tested against True Summer. We had gotten stuck between the two during the first draping. I felt like I was in between the two. On Day 2, Winter was the winner.

True Summer

True Summer (cool/muted) – The boldest blue greens, fuchsias, and blue violets of the palette were really good, but the neutrals turned my features to mush. My skin became more blotchy. I wasn’t sure if I looked soft and feminine or feeble and near death.

True Winter (cool/saturated) – These colors were starker and colder in person than I had imagined them to be. I couldn’t tell if I looked powerful or harsh. Some of the colors thinned my face, but not in a flattering way. The colors did clear my complexion.

Bright Winter (cool/neutral/bright) – One look at the makeup colors online (shocking pinks and maraschino reds) and I ruled it out, but seeing the drapes in person was a different experience. By far the most flattering neutrals on my skin. I felt the balance of intensity and softness that neither True Winter nor True Summer fulfilled. My skin lifted and became more uniform.

Light Summer (cool/neutral/light) – Bright Winter is tested against Light Summer as they have much in common. My eyes loved the pinks and aquas, but the rest of my face disappeared. Clearly a “no”.

Really, Bright Winter?

I wasn’t ready to allow the Bright Winter lipstick near me. Terry, who at this point in her career is part psychologist, didn’t even try. She knew I was a low to no makeup kind of girl. Instead, she showed me how some of the Light Summer and True Summer cosmetics provided a more gentle effect while still staying in the cool/neutral playground. (Terry carries both Mary Kay and the 12 Blueprints line of makeup in her studio).

Emmy award winning makeup artist (and dear friend) Dale Bach, taught me how to adapt makeup to my features and personality. For me, that means using small, strategic placement of color. I am also inspired by the Korean makeup styles (many of which suite Bright Winter coloring). I can express my Fire in colorful clothes and eccentric accessories, but in makeup I am pure Metal element. I want minimalism and purity that doesn’t distract from me.

Because Bright Winter is cool/neutral, there is a cool to slightly warm spectrum to the palette than can be explored in makeup as I detail below. I found the 12 Blueprints True Summer eyeshadow palette too dusky and muted, but Light Summer worked.

Light Summer Eyeshadow

Light Summer eyeshadow palette from 12 Blueprints – The three taupes on the right work very well on me with an icy lavender highlight like Frees Ya! from Elea Blake. Another option: the champagne highlight from the 12 Blueprints Bright Winter  palette gave a beautiful glow. The two highlights on the left of the above picture didn’t work on my skin.

Blush and Lipstick – Warm side of the palette

Orchidee Light Summer – 12 Blueprints cosmetics are highly saturated. What I like about this blush is that I can apply as heavily as I want and on my coloring it still looks like a natural glow. It is the strongest of the Light Summer blushes.

Flowergirl Light Summer

Flowergirl Light Summer – This glossy pink lipstick is very delicate but is great for daytime when I want to look polished but not made up.

Bijou True Winter

Bijou True Winter – I had purchased this gloss when I thought I was a True Winter. It is like a MLBB shade and goes well with both cool and cool/neutral colors.

Blush and Lipstick – Cool side of the palette

Watered Silk True Summer

Watered Silk True Summer – This is my favorite blush! Perfect for a natural glow.

Supreme True Summer – This is where Terry talked me into a real lipstick, though still subtle, it was colorful enough to make my eyes pop.

Now or Never True Winter

Now or Never True Winter – This is another gloss I picked up when I was moonlighting as a True Winter. It gives a subtle fuchsia pink effect.

My Angel Rita

I watched the sun peak up on the horizon and all the cars commuting to work. All the while Rita’s tiny body lay limp in my arms and the rest of the world went on oblivious to the fact it had lost such an angelic being. Her passing was as good as one could hope. I had woken early to make her special soup. I took her outside to go to the bathroom. She seemed to be recovering, but suddenly she collapsed and started twitching. I picked her up and she died in my arms.

It is funny how what you complained about when someone was alive is what you end up missing the most. Of course I miss her sweetness, her smell, her weight when I held her, the divot on the bridge on her nose, and the cute grunting noises she would make. But I also miss her stubbornness and how she always found a way to get what she wanted. Until the end she would find a way to steal the cat food or run away from the vet. My mom asked this morning, “How can something so little leave such a big space when she is gone?”

I don’t want to forget these things. I don’t want to forget how it felt to hold her or the details of her little face. I won’t see her when I wake up in the morning tomorrow, nor will she be there to greet me when I get home. I also know that the pain doesn’t go away, I will just become accustomed to it.

You always wish you had more time. She was my constant companion. She went through my masters and doctoral programs, treated patients with me at the clinic, and traveled to my talks and on trips. She was with me for all my ups and downs and knows me better than most people ever will. She gave me so much. I hope I was good to her too.

Growing Bare Root Orchids: An Organic Experiment

Phalaenopsis

Phalaenopsis hybrid

I admit I was a little sad to wake up this morning to one single (albeit beautiful) flowering orchid after we attended the Redlands Orchid Festival yesterday. She was a phalaenopsis hybrid that was too good a deal to pass up. After the Tamiami Orchid Show, Dr. Judith Andrews and I came home with a dozen flowering plants. This time we knew the plants we wanted and that we could get a lot more of them if we purchased bare root plants.

AeridesOdorata

Aerides odorata with new root growth and flower spike.

Bare root plants are usually found in bins at orchid shows for a steal compared to the price if they were potted. They look half dead and unappealing, but with a little TLC they spring back to life. The above Aerides was a bare root cutting I purchased 2 months ago from Robert Palmer Nursery. Even after being abused (I put her in high sun and burned her leaves) she has significant new root growth and a flower spike.

We went to the show with a plan: better plants, long term blooming, and more of them. The problem is, bare rooted plants don’t always thrive. I have already learned to repot every orchid I acquire. For phalaenopsis and paphiopediliums I use fine coconut fiber, fine orchid fir bark, stalite, and sponge rock. For cattleyas, oncidiums, and dendrobiums I use a mix of stalite, sponge rock, coconut chips & charcoal. I have nearly lost  several plants after believing vendors who say,”You don’t have to worry about repotting for 1-2 years.” That may be true in other climates, but in South Florida (or any wet climate) sphagnum moss or regular tree bark can turn orchid roots to mush in a matter of weeks. Orchid vendors pot their orchids to endure neglect and survive, not to thrive in home orchid collections.

Southwest Florida Orchid Society president Barb Murza advised us on how to treat bare root orchids. She explained that they have been through a lot of abuse. They have been shipped from other countries and jostled around. They endure cuts and broken roots leaving them wide open for fungal infections that can wipe them out. She recommends treatment with a systemic fungicide such as Aliete. Further, many successful growers soak any orchid they are repotting (bare root or established) and their growing media in a combination of fungicide, Super Thrive, and fertilizer.

We are growing many of our orchids as medicine so this is not an option. We substituted an organic neem oil-based 3-in-1 fungicide, miticide, and insecticide we use on our fruit trees. We added this to a gallon of water. We then added Super Thrive and the orchid food we are currently using. We soaked each orchid before we mounted or potted them, then we immersed the full pots in the solution after planting. Let’s see how it goes.

You wouldn’t know it by looking at these newly mounted/potted plants, but these are some of the showiest bloomers in the orchid world:

DendrobiumsMounted

Dendrobium chrysanthum, Dendrobium officinale, and Rhynchorides bangkok sunset.

Get Rid of Acne Without Trashing Your Skin

I suffered from severe acne for many years and thus am educated on the harsh and ineffective products that are often used to address the condition. There are many contributors to acne, such as stress, hormonal imbalance, digestive issues, poor diet, topical irritants, inadequate hygiene, etc. This is why it can be so difficult to treat. In Traditional Chines Medicine (TCM) we use herbal medicine and acupuncture to get to the root of the problem. Additionally, we recommend important diet and lifestyle changes patients can do at home which form the basis of healthy skin. Natural skincare does not just mean clean ingredients. It means approaching the skin in a holistic way. It means using a variety of tools to increase the health and resilience of the skin over time.

Relaxation

No matter the cause of acne, Heat (inflammation) is always a factor. Stress, anxiety, and frustration all generate Heat in the body. Most of us need to schedule time for regular relaxation (like meditation, yoga, massage).

coix seed (Job's tears, yi yi ren)

coix seed (Job’s tears, yi yi ren)

Diet

Is important to minimize heating foods in the diet: such as sugar (white bread, fruit juice, soda, ice cream), fried foods, processed foods, garlic, spices, alcohol, and lamb. If you have food sensitivities these foods will also generate Heat in the body. Common culprits include: gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, and shellfish. Drinking ample water and eating a high proportion of vegetables helps to cool the body and promotes regular bowel movements. Particularly helpful foods for acneic conditions include coix seed (Chinese barley, yi yi ren), biter melon, daikon radish, fennel bulb, and honeysuckle (jin yin hua) tea.

Skincare Products

Topical skincare should most importantly be void of irritants, harsh chemicals, and pore-clogging agents. Inappropriate moisturizers, cleansers, and sun protection can sabotage your efforts. Liquid makeup used to cover blemishes only contribute to more inflammation and should be avoided. As a general rule you want to include an anti-inflammatory, an anti-bacterial, an enzyme exfoliant, and a Vitamin A into your regimen. I do not believe in using acids in homecare regimens as frequent acid exfoliation weakens the epidermis and contributes to inflammation. The following are some of my favorite acne-clearing products:

How to Avoid a Bad Boyfriend with Chinese Face Reading

Chinese Face Reading evolved as a way of diagnosing disease, ascertaining constitutional strengths and weaknesses, and predicting how individuals would get along together. I studied face reading with Patrician McCarthy, of the Mian Shiang Institute, at Yo San University. Her classes brought the abstract concepts of the 5 Elements into tangible features and personality traits. Face reading is not only an incredible tool for acupuncturists, but also for every manager, salesperson, and dating person.

My teacher emphasized both the gifts and challenges of our facial features. Thick eyebrows, for example, show a propensity towards great passion, or anger, depending on our choices and life experiences. What each of us needs and wants in terms of a relationship partner varies considerably and you will want to delve into face reading more deeply for specific features that work for you in a mate.

Crazy Eyes

Mel-Gibson-crazy
A person’s Shen, or spirit, can be seen in their eyes. The number one red flag is someone with a crazy, sinister, or otherwise unsettling look in their eyes. Unless someone is non-functional, they will be able to maintain a facade of normalcy during initial courtship. The unsettling gaze is something you will catch by chance when a person is triggered and their pathology surfaces. This may seem obvious, but we often disregard our instincts when the person in question has an otherwise pretty package.

While a crazed look should be taken as a clear sign to get away, the following traits are tendencies to keep an eye out for:

Cleft Chin

Sizeable Cleft Chin

Sizeable Cleft Chin

An Extreme Cleft

An Extreme Cleft

This is a matter of degree. A shallow indentation or dimple is a Fire trait and shows a desire for attention, playful flirtation, physical connection, and fun sexuality. My teacher also called it a Performer’s Chin as it is common amongst actors and other performers.

A cleft indicates more ego than fun as a motivation, a stronger need for attention, and also an association between getting sex and feeling loved. If someone is not aware, this can lead to a propensity towards sex addiction.

A very deep cleft indicates an even stronger association between sex and love. Sexual rejection is very difficult for them and there is a tendency towards addiction and predatory behavior if they have not learned to deal with these feelings. This is also an indicator of a “manly” man.

Little Eyes

drphil
Very small eyes in proportion to the rest of the face indicates someone who is ambitious, self-referential, materialistic, and hedonistic in sensual pursuits. These qualities make them more likely to be unfaithful. There are many factors involved in people being unfaithful. These individuals just have a stronger natural pull in that direction.

Inverted Trapezoid-Shaped Face

jaws
Strong jaws are a sign of determination. As with all features, the bigger the feature, the stronger the trait. Determination is exaggerated in an inverted trapezoid-shaped face. The jaws are wide and strong compared to a narrower forehead. These individuals are physically strong, determined to get their way, and aggressive. They can be tyrannical.

Downward Slanting Eyebrows

hugh-grant
When the eyebrows slant downwards it indicates a tendency towards high expectation of others but not necessarily of themselves. They also tend towards selfishness and promiscuity. They do tend to be loyal once they find the right person.

Prominent Browbone

Prominent browbone both central forehead and over eyes.

Prominent browbone both central forehead and over eyes.

A prominent browbone indicates control. When the browbone is prominent over the eyes but not the center, the individual has a great deal of self-control. When the browbone is strong in the center of the forehead this indicates a need to control others.

Thicker Lower Lip

daniel-craig
The lower lip tends to be a little fuller than the top lip in most people. Also a thick lower lip balanced by a thick upper lip does not apply. This refers to the lower lip being significantly, proportionately larger than the upper lip. Such individuals tend to be sensual, unreliable, and have an (undeserved) high opinion of themselves. They have difficulty keeping relationships or staying faithful. They have a lot of wants and needs and act out on their desires.

Unibrow

unibrow2
When the two eyebrows are connected it indicates there is more anger than passion, and a tendency to direct it towards others. These individuals tend to be edgy, provocative, and quick to fight. While this may be a great trait in a contact sport, it isn’t so nice in relationships. This is an easy fix, however. Consistent tweezing will mellow this trait over time.

In closing I want to note that our personalities and behaviors are also shaped by our social conditioning, family values, and personal choices. For example, I know a man with a very prominent browbone (both central and over the eyes). He is a warm, laid back guy by all accounts, particularly to his wife and child. He claims he had been willful as a child but that his tough Korean mom had “beat it out” of him. He had learned to funnel his controlling nature into professional accomplishments and kept it out his relationships. Rather, use these features as additional clues.

Many of these traits are also associated with high testosterone, a quality that requires social conditioning and positive outlets in order to be constructive.

The Face Reader – by Patrician McCarthy, is an extensive look at Daoist Face Reading covering 5 Element Personalities and specific facial features. She has 5 new books coming out in 2014, one for each element.

Conscious Ejaculation; a Key to Men’s Vitality

happy-healthy-man51Ancient Daoists advocated limiting the frequency of ejaculation to increase vitality and longevity. They would often give a mathematical formula such as the famous one by Sun Simiao:

A man may attain health and longevity if he practices an ejaculation frequency of twice monthly or 24 times a year. If at the same time he pays careful attention to proper diet and exercise he will have a long healthy life.”

This did not limit the frequency of intercourse or orgasm. Rather Daoists learned to control their ejaculation and were able to reach orgasm without ejaculating. As with everything, there is a too little and too much. Modern interpretations can get us into trouble, as our society seems to gravitate towards extremes. For example, men who are too zealous with limiting ejaculation will overheat and develop mental and emotional disturbances.

Ejaculation frequency becomes important when vitality (as seen in immunity, fertility, or energy levels) is low or after the age of 40, when men’s Jing starts to decline. Often this means limiting ejaculation to once every 7-14 days. Men will know they need to limit ejaculation when they do not feel revived or feel disconnected from their lover after sex.

Modern Research Appears to Support These Practices

Testosterone levels in men can be seen as a physical indicator of the health of Yang Qi, as the health of the sperm can be used to assess the state of the Jing. This gives us a way of translating ancient Daoist practices into modern scientific understanding, even though the concepts of Yang Qi and Jing encompass more than just testosterone levels and the health of the sperm respectively. Daoist (and TCM) theory states that aging occurs when the Jing declines. (Our Jing includes both our Yin and Yang Qi, however men usually require more Yang tonification and women more Yin tonification.)

A 2003 study recorded that abstinence for 7 days raised the subjects’ serum testosterone levels to 154.7% of baseline. The study also noted minimal fluctuations in serum testosterone levels from the 2nd to 5th day of abstinence. Studies support a direct correlation with testosterone levels in men and signs of vitality such a  2013 study suggesting a link between low testosterone levels and dementia in older men.

The Consciousness Part

This information is not new, and there are many resources on the mechanics of ejaculation control in both the Daoist and Tantric traditions. What is too often missing is the ethics part; how you increase your vitality and what you do with it. I believe that men not only have to develop themselves physically in regards to sex, but also need to work to raise the consciousness of their sexuality.

Much of male sexual conditioning is predatory and unconscious in nature. There is a consciousness raising process that must occur prior to developing sexual techniques whereby we become aware of our connection and social responsibility. When men are exposed to these principles without this awareness it is easy for them to develop sophisticated tools in the same old context; as a means to gaining power, only they now have the power to do more harm.

The pitfall is in increasing Yang in the body in an unbalanced way. Our Kidney Yang provides our determination and drive. Our Kidney Yin gives us our sense of oneness and spiritual connection to the world around us. When the two are balanced and strong, we naturally become instruments of great service. If our Kidney Yang becomes excessive it leads to tyranny. We become self-centered, arrogant, ruthless. We live by the motto “the strong eat the weak.” Ultimately this leads to self-destruction, but only after incurring a great deal of negative karma.

An example of misguided sexual cultivation is sexual vampirism, whereby individuals are not content to conserve their own energy and steal the sexual energy from others. This was acceptable, and still is in certain circles. Short-term this can increase energy, as well as ego. Long-term you get a heap of bad karma and a big step backwards in your spiritual evolution.

Conscious ejaculation greatly surpasses the benefits of ejaculation control. Limiting ejaculation increases short-term physical vitality. Conscious sexual cultivation has the ability to transform a man’s life and that of the people around him.

Ways to Infuse Consciousness into Sexual Cultivation:

  1. Practice in the context of a spiritual goal.
  2. Hold the intention of giving and receiving fully during sexual interactions.
  3. Always honor your lover.
  4. During ejaculation, imagine you are giving healing, empowering energy to your lover or to a particular goal.
  5. When abstaining from ejaculation, imagine giving heart energy to your lover or to a particular goal. Use it as an opportunity to increase connection.

What This Means in Practical Terms

The Jing Cycles serve as a guide for how we can care for ourselves to extend our vitality. They describe a general trend. Some individuals are born with a strong constitution and can get away with misbehaving longer, while others must always exercise caution with their health. The natural peak of vitality for most women is between the ages of 21-35. Before age 21 the body is vulnerable because it has not reached full maturity. Protective measures should be taken, particularly in early childhood, to strengthen digestion and immunity. After age 35, surplus vitality begins to wane, the sex hormones begin to drop, and rejuvenative measures should be employed.

The care of girls prior to age 7 is the same as for boys under age 8 that I describe in 7 Times a Woman. Into adulthood, the diet and lifestyle recommendations are similar to men, and vary more based on individual imbalances (disease pattern differentiation). Where maintaining vitality diverges from men is in the area of procreation.

Longterm Vitality Means Conserving Jing

We pass on the best of ourselves to our offspring through the genetic material via the egg and sperm. The egg and sperm can be viewed as a physical manifestation of our Jing. Our bodies do not differentiate between when we actually want to produce a child or not, so there will be some Jing loss for every menstruation (or gestation) and ejaculation. For this reason women must take extra care of themselves during menses and during the first month postpartum, to recuperate the loss. Men must learn to limit ejaculation based on their levels of vitality. Both men and women need to practice rejuvenation and boost their hormone levels during menopause and andropause, when sex hormones decline.

Young women should learn how to read their periods and practice Menstrual Recovery. This will balance imbalances before they progress to disease. Women must further practice Postpartum Recovery during the first month postpartum to fully recover their bodies and strengthen their baby’s vitality in the process. Women should begin taking tonic herbs and practicing rejuvenation at age 35. During perimenopause women should balance any symptoms that arise. By correcting imbalances along the way, women can improve their health in the next phase of their life.

For a synopsis of menstrual, postpartum, and menopausal care please see article The 3 Golden Opportunities. For details on care during the 7 year cycles, how to read your menstruation, and menstrual, postpartum, and menopausal care, please see the book  7 Times a Woman.

Men’s 8 Year Cycles of Jing

yangFor those who were wondering, here are the men’s Jing (vitaliy) Cycles:

From the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon

8 (1×8)- A man’s Kidney energy is prosperous, his hair develops and his teeth emerge at the age of eight.

丈夫八岁,肾气实,发长齿更;

16 (2×8)- His Kidney energy grows and is filled with vital energy, and he is able to let his sperm out at the age of 16.

二八,肾气盛,天癸至,精气溢写,阴阳和,故能有子;

24 (3×8)- His Kidney energy is developed, his extremities are strong, and all of his teeth are developed by the age of 24.

三八,肾气平均,筋骨劲强,故真牙生而长极;

32 (4×8)- His body has developed to its best condition, and his extremities and muscles are very strong at the age of 32.

四八,筋骨隆盛,肌肉满壮;

40 (5×8)- His Kidney energy begins to decline, his hair falls out and his teeth begin to whither at the age of 40.

五八,肾气衰,发堕齿槁;

48 (6×8)- His Kidney energy declines more, the yang energy of the entire body declines, his complexion becomes withered and his hair turns white at the age of 48.

六八,阳气衰竭于上,面焦,发鬓颁白;

56 (7×8)- His Liver energy declines as a result of Kidney deficiency; the tendons become rigid and fail to be nimble at the age of 56.

七八,肝气衰,筋不能动,天癸竭,精少,肾藏衰,形体皆极;

64 (8×8)- His essence and vital energy is weak, as are his bones and tendons. His teeth fall out and his body becomes decrepit at the age of 64.

八八,则齿发去。

For this reason women must take extra care of themselves during menses and during the first month postpartum, to recuperate the loss. Men must learn to limit ejaculation based on their levels of vitality. Both men and women need to practice rejuvenation and boost their hormone levels during menopause and andropause, when sex hormones decline.
